MTPE

(Machine Translation Post-editing)

Machine translation (MT) with post-editing (PE) is fast becoming a standard practice in our industry. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have had a significant impact on the progress of its development. Both in terms of what is currently possible and what we can expect in the years to come.

Machine Translation is thus used only under specific circumstances, depending on different factors.

MACHINE TRANSLATION PROCEDURE

DEMA Solutions follows specific
“MT-Procedure” when it comes to MTPE:

MACHINE TRANSLATION PROCEDURE Dema Solutions follows specific “MT-Procedure” when it comes to MTPE: 1. EVALUATION OF SOURCE TEXT 2. EVALUATION OF MT OUTPUT 3. POST EDITING

EVALUATION OF SOURCE

EVALUATION OF OUTPUT

This step of the process can be done either by means of industry standard automated measures or human evaluation.

DEMA Solutions is combining both methods in order to avoid any kind of risk.

First, we use Memsource’s automated measure tool:

MTQE or Machine Translation Quality Estimation

This determines which Machine Translation gives best results for certain language pairs and domains. Once we have the MTQE results, we send the text corpus to our trusted vendors to estimate which MT engine gives better results and decide upon comparison between these 2 evaluations.

You can find more detailed information about MTQE on the following link:

POST EDITING

The level of post-editing adopted for an MT project depends on two factors:

1.) The evaluation of the machine translation output to be post-edited, and

2.) The instructions received from the client. If no post-editing approach is specifically requested by the client, then MT full post-editing should be applied.

According to client’s requirements,
we differentiate Machine Translation Post-editing in two types:
light and full post editing.

Light post-editing

Serves to provide comprehensible content (i.e. you can understand the main content of the message), accurate (i.e. it communicates the same meaning as the source text), but as not being stylistically compelling. The text may sound like it was generated by a computer, syntax might be somewhat unusual, grammar may not be perfect but the message is accurate.

Full post-editing

Serves to provide level of quality that is generally defined as being comprehensible (i.e. an end user perfectly understands the content of the message), accurate (i.e. it communicates the same meaning as the source text), stylistically fine, though the style may not be as good as that achieved by a native-speaker human translator. Syntax is normal, grammar and punctuation are correct.
